Rolling Study Halls, etc.

Whether you are forced to endure long school bus rides or not (don't forget those long bus rides to athletic events!), here's an idea to think about. Read this article and think about whether EK should try something like this. For a better idea of how this whole things works, here's another article about rolling study halls. After you read both articles, come back here and leave comments about whether rolling study halls are something we should consider at our school. Also, what other places or situations come to mind that might benefit from WiFi?  What would be positive aspects and what would be negative outcomes of having Internet access in these places?

  1. I think it would be better to have access to the internet on the bus cause it will make all the kids sit down and be quiet and they would not jump over seats or do stupid things on the bus. It will help students get their work done when they haven't had time to do it so it would give them a chance to do there unfinished homework.

  2. I think that our school should consider doing this because I believe that kids will get there homework done and could get started on other projects. Also the students would be a lot quieter and the bus drivers will be able to concentrate on their driving mainly in bad weather.I think that on sports fields and parks should have WiFi also that way kids can sit outside and do their homework and get some fresh air. The negative thing about this is how much it would cost and you would have to worry about people trying to steal your net book or laptop.

  3. I think that rolling study halls are a great idea. I have to ride the bus a pretty longs ways in the morning and afternoons. Also, I play three sports and the bus rides to other schools is long and boring. If we had Wifi on the buses, we could be doing homework, or just keeping ourselves entertained while riding. Plus the bus driver wouldn't have as much to worry about because most of the kids will be busy on their computer. Everyone likes to get on the computer one in awhile so it really just benefits everyone.

  4. I think that a bus with wifi is a pretty good idea. The bus that i ride is extremely crazy, and everyone is really bad. So i think wifi would somewhat be better. I know for sure that i would use it. Maybe not for educational purposes, but i highly doubt that anyone would use it for school related stuff.

  5. I think it's an amazing idea. More students could get more work done, including me, just because of the long bus ride. But, on bumpy rides, especially with laptops, they could break if you think about it. Accessing the internet is amazing. But, would we have to bring our own things or they would provide the electronics for us? O.o

  6. It is a good idea. Everyone would be calmed down. There would probably not be any fights or anything on the bus. I am the second person on and the second to last person off of the bus so this would make the ride not as boring. I could also do homework. Another place that we could have WiFi is on the whole school property. If you were waiting for a ride home from school you could get on the computer and do whatever you wanted. The bad thing is that people would get on things that they shouldn't. Overall, the WiFi is a good idea.

  7. I think that are school should consider doing this because it would be a faster way to do are homework. People would be calm and they wouldn't be hitting people every five seconds. We could keep in touch with are teachers, even if they are home sick. I think this would cut out most of the trouble on the buses because people would be to busy doing the work.

  8. I think its a good idea to have rolling bus rides. It would be a good idea to be able to do things on the bus. This could help kids with there homework and other studies. It would be good for the kids and the bus driver because the kids would be more interested in there computer then other people. So that means that the bus driver wouldn't have to yell at the kids to be quite.

  10. I think it would be really cool. Most kids would be quiet, but some kids cant afford labtops like others so the would still be hyper. I think we should still do it. It would be a great way to do work and do things ona really long bus ride. I can think of any other place at our school that could benifit from wifi. the entire school already has it.

  11. Yes we should have rolling study. It would give the bus drivers a easier time to keep kids under control. If you have WiFi in your car while your traveling, your kids would be quiet and they won't get in too many arguments because they would have something to do. The negative outcomes of WiFi in your car would be if your trying to tell the other person something, they won't listen because they would have the computer.

  12. Yes. Wifi would come in handy if you were in another state or something and you needed to send a big research paper to a teacher and that was the only way to do it.A positive thing about this would be a lower need for paper to make textbooks and handouts, it would just be all electrical.A negative thing about this would be if so many laptops stopped working and they needed repaired, it would cost a lot of money.

  13. I think we should consider having rolling study halls especially for the people that have long bus rides. Other places that might benefit from WiFi are school (so you would have to ask to use the computer or the computers are all taken) and somehow having free WiFi on the highway so on long trips people could still use the Internet even if they don't have the Internet in their car. The only thing bad about having Internet in these place is at school your laptop could get damaged on the way to school and with having Internet on the highway it would be nice, but your battery might not last that long without being plugged in and charging.

  14. I really would like to have wifi on the bus. My bus is so crazy. It would make the bus ride easier. I would really like it because maybe i could finish more of my homework done before games.

  15. I don't think East Knox should do this for a few reasons. If kids bring their laptops, MacBooks and other expensive eletronics to school it's just going to add up to more stealing and fights. Also, not every kid at East Knox has a laptop, espeically younger kids, I don't think that just a few people with laptops will keep a bus full of rowdy kids to suddenly calm down. The bus ride can also be really bumpy and it's easy to drop and break something expensive. If East Knox puts a WiFi on the buses kids are probably not going to use it for homework or research. East Knox couldn't afford it anyway, and to me it's just a waste of money.

  16. I think it would be good for EK to have WIFI on our buses. I think this because my bus would be more calm eccept for the fifth graders. One disadvantage is that the school would need to pay a bill on every bus that has it.

  17. i think its a good idea but we will never have enough money for wifi because weve been having alot of dumb budget cuts.

  18. I think we should.Especialy for the people who have really long bus rides. It would keep everyone entertained while still being quiet. There are some people that can't afford laptops though so I don't know what they would do.

  19. I think this could be a good idea, I mean it would be way more quiet then it is now and we could do something other than throw stuff everywhere and annoy people. I think it would also make the bus ride more entertaining for a lot of people who have long bus rides and get off last. I think East Knox shouldn't get them though I mean seeing all the cuts now imagine how expensive it will be to hook the WiFi up to the busses, so I think it's a cool idea of course I just dont think it's a good idea at the moment

  20. I think that we should have WI-FI on the buses because it would make the bus less dangerous, and i think that it would let students get on my space and things before and after school so they wouldn't be tempted during the school day to get on those things and get in trouble! So I am ALL for it!

  21. I think this idea of a rolling study hall would be good because kids could get homework done if they didn't get it finished. Also I think it could be good because for those who play sports and have to ride the bus long distances to their sporting events. They would have something to do and could do homework so they wouldn't have to do it late at night after they are tired and don't feel like it.

  22. I agree that it would keep people entertained, it would make things more calm on the bus ride. Sometimes on buses kids do get loud and jump over seats, but with laptops this probably wouldn't happen. The only bad thing is what if the laptops get ruined.

  23. I like the fact of having internet access on the bus rides. I would love it! I could do all my homework then hang out with all my friends when I got home or do whatever else that I would want to do. Also, then you wouldn't have the excuse to say that you don't have internet access so you couldn't do the assignment. Also, you can talk to all your friends and stuff online so then you could figure out what all you might end up wanting to do when you get home and get to hang out with them.

  24. I think having WIFI on buses would be a great benefit. It would keep people busy on long rides to school and home. It would also give students the chance to get work done and start on new things. Also, kids would stay out of trouble on the bus. And it would be a lot quieter. But there is a disadvantage though, we could spend our funds on other things other then new technology on buses. And people that don't have an iTouch or laptop have no use for the WIFI. Also you would have to worry about kids bringing expensive electronics to school and them getting taken or broken. So while its a good idea, it has things wrong with it.

  25. I do not think we should have WiFi on buses. It's just a distraction from the good things in life, like friends and the outdoors. Also, not everyone will be able to use the wireless internet. I know many people who do not have laptops or Ipods. It will just make them jealous.

  26. Not really because are bus rides arent that long if you think about that. Most kids also ride with their older brothers or parents and half the other kids dont even know how to work a laptop. It could be a big misunderstanding if we did so. I'm not really sure what benefits we could get from other places. Just getting some extra work done. Some bad aspects could be kids getting on bad websites or kids trying to steal or hack into the schools internet. There could also be kids sending bad messages back and forth to each other and getting into arguments on the bus or at school because of this.

  27. I think this would be a great idea. that way most of the kids that don't do their homework and their excuse is i had a game of i didn't have time. Well with this they could be working on it on their way to school, from school, and to and from different games. Maybe this woyuld keep a lot of kids from failing classes and not getting work done. It also would keep kids from fighting and being out of control. One disadvantage of this would be that they woyuldn't always be able to control what the kids are on and it would be kind of expensive. Like if something happens to them and they need fixed or antything like that.

  28. I think that it would be a good idea to have WiFi and everything because then it would keep lots of people entertained. It would also give those who are behind in school work a chance to catch up some assignments and know what they would need to do for homework. Internet on the bus may also help some students who don't do all that great in school to do better.
It may not be that great of an idea because many people get headaches when reading will on a moving vehicle. My sister gets headaches when she glances at a book when she is in a moving vehicle. There are some good things about having internet on the bus but there are also some ideas that are not that great.

  29. I think its a great idea but for me it doesn't matter because my ride is usually a minute long. It would be cool though bu I don't think a lot of us have laptops anyways.

  30. I do think that EK should do rolling study halls. It would be so cool. I don't think there is really any other place that would benefit from WiFi because if u put it in your car it would make it so dangerous and a lot more people would get in wrecks. In a bus it would be good because none would be fighting with each other or they would not be jumping over the seats or crawling on the floor. But it would also have a negative effect because, someone could start cyberbullying people instead of physically hurting the other person.

  31. I think that would be awesome. instead of just sitting there looking out the boring window we could actually type our reports or just play on the internet while we are on our way to school. Even cooler if they provided laptops that slide out but thats a ggreat idea.

  32. It would be very helpful, for the bus I ride. But can EK really afford the Wifi technology or what it would take to wire it in and supply the system? I know I am being technical but still, we've went through some major cuts. Instead of Wifi for a 'rolling study hall' bring back some other academic programs.

  33. This looks like a really good idea and i am going to try to talk to my dad about getting it in our car it basicly costs as much as a cell phone plan and you can buy it at Advance Auto Parts in Mount Vernon. I also think its a good idea for the buses because it would give exta time for homework and keep the buses from getting out of control like my bus!

  34. I dont thinkits a good idea because laptops could get borken and it wouldn't be good. I dont think students would be doing work I mean everyone knows they wouldnt. I would like to have wifi some places but on the bus no its just not safe. Its positive because you can get work done but , its negative because things can happen like bad websites come up and things get broken.
